A Nightmare of an Exhibition that Really Happened
by Kenneth Baker

Art, to some, a precious commodity that should be praised and admired. Being one of those people, this article horrified and stuns me. To think that someone, or a group of collaborative people spent time and money solely in order to insult and degrade others works of art is astonishing. The simple fact that this exhibition was allowed to happen, and was in existence is appalling. Taking works of art, in essence works of emotion and calling them "nature as seen by sick minds", and naming the entire exhibition "Degenerate Art" proved and accomplished nothing, and thus was a waste of time, money and irreplaceable works of art. The fragile works of art were displayed, and as children so spitefully make fun of those different from them, the works were poorly imitated, and ridiculed.

So much emotion is put into any piece of art that is created. Whether that emotion is portrayed through music notes, paint or words it is still emotion, and to take away that emotion from someone just because the thinking represented does not coincide with theirs is definetly wrong. The emotions that someone else chose to depict is their own decision, and no one elses. If someone happened to like that emotion, or was able to see that emotion and decided to celebrate that emotion by placing it in a gallery, then no one should have the right to disagree with that portrayal, especially by placing it in an exhibition titled "Degenerate Art." Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and because of this, hopefully will not happen in the future.

Artists have been persecuted since the beginning of time. Certain people and groups of people believe that art is a waste of time and is useless. This fact is why this exhibit was allowed to exist, and these works were allowed to be debased and degraded. These groups of people do not agree with the emotions and forms that the artists use in their paintings.

Art and emotion go together, and even if certain people don't agree with what is depicted in the paintings, sculptures and drawings, they are works of art, and works of emotion to be treasured. Art is not foolishness, nor is it nonart, such as the exhibition "Degenerate Art" signifies, art is an all-encompassing range of emotion, and each separate piece represents a range of feeling and emotions that, to the artist could not have been placed anywhere else. Whether a viewer, and not even all the viewers, if just one viewer can feel those emotions while looking at the painting determines if the painting is successful or not. The paintings, just by the standard of those who painted them were honest and exemplary, and if someone else felt that emotion by looking at the art, then the painting would be true to what the emotion was. The Nazi's could not feel that way, and thus put together the exhibit.
